A guide to 1200 x 600 paving slabs

Our guide to 1200 x 600 paving slabs explores this lovely large format tile size and how 1200 x 600 paving slabs can enhance your outdoor space. Versatile, durable and aesthetically pleasing in equal measure, this is a tile size that can transform the garden and with options to also run the same design of tile inside bring with it the perfect opportunity to be the best tiles for outdoors and link lounge to lawn.

So, let’s dig in and take a look at the benefits of porcelain 1200 x 600 paving slabs and why we believe porcelain makes for the best tiles for outdoors.

A great way to add value to your property

A well designed outdoor space not only creates a warm, welcoming environment, to put it bluntly, it also adds value to your property. Porcelain pavers are the ideal material to bring a modern, architectural feel to spaces in part due to their rectified straight tile edges as well as  beautiful designs.

Effectively a well designed porcelain tile makes it easy to create not just additional space outside but an additional room. From dining to lounge, kitchen to snug, you can create the space you want and picking the right paving plays a crucial role. Porcelain paving has without doubt become the ‘go-to’ for creating superior exteriors. This isn’t just about adding a patio this is about adding value to your property, transforming your outdoor area into a stylish haven. It’s a very different look and feel to traditional flagstones with their rustic charm. This is about clean lines, flat surfaces and bringing the inside, outside.

Seamlessly connect lounge to lawn

Bringing the inside outside through flooring is a clever way to connect lounge to lawn. And again, can add value to your property. With sliding doors and bi-folds boasting ever thinner thresholds that are flush and hardly there, creating an uninterrupted flow from in to out is easier than ever. The connecting of spaces and ability to move between indoor and outdoor effortlessly enhances the feeling of space all round.

All our 1200 x 600 paving slabs are 20mm thick for outside spaces and they all have a co-ordinating inside tile in 9mm thickness for inside. The outside slabs are generally in a grip or antislip finish and the inside tiles feature a more soft or matt finish. Both tiles bear the same design and colour to give the appearance of seamlessness.

Designing with 1200 x 600 paving slabs

1200 x 600 paving slabs are larger than your average slab. That means there are fewer joints and that in turn delivers a more spacious, seamless feel. These larger formats are a great choice for making smaller areas in particular feel larger and more open. It also means less grout lines and less maintenance. Having said that, porcelain really requires very little ongoing maintenance.

Layout is one key consideration. Whereas with a square tile the tendency is to “stack” the tiles ie form a grid, with 1200 x 600 paving slabs you may opt to ‘brick bond’ the tiles instead to create a different look and feel. Just remember not to overlap by more than 1/3 to avoid lippage.

Or for a more contemporary look and feel you may want to stack the tiles as shown below. This format really does create a thoroughly modern canvas especially in a cool concrete or stone effect porcelain.

The Best Tiles For Outdoors - Steps, Stepping Stones and more

Another key benefit of porcelain 20mm thick porcelain pavers is that they can be laid directly onto gravel or grass. It’s easy to create a pathway with these larger format tiles in this extra thick material. And stepping stones are a great way to connect two outdoor spaces, perhaps a garden office to your new outdoor lounge area.

It is also easy to fabricate so steps, coping stones and other items can easily be made bringing your whole design together beautifully.

Why Choose Porcelain for Outside

We think porcelain makes for the best tiles for outdoors because one of its greatest advantages  is its versatility. With a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, porcelain, unlike ceramic tiles, is frost and fade resistant.  It’s an incredibly dense material and able to stand whatever life throws at it, being both scratch and stain resistant. It requires minimal ongoing maintenance. As it naturally inhibits the growth of mould or moss and doesn’t require sealing, waxing or polishing it can be used outside with minimal effort. And it comes in select finishes providing additional grip for your outside area.
