Choosing coloured bathroom tiles

Thinking of choosing coloured bathroom tiles but not sure where to start? Let us help! Whether it’s colour drenching, pretty patterns or just a splash of colour, coloured bathroom tiles are a brilliant way to add a little pizzaz to your room. From the vibrant tones to more muted notes, coloured bathroom tiles allow you to put your own stamp on a space and are great for creating everything from stand out feature walls, decorative floors, individual splashbacks or breathing new life into an area of your home.

As well as colour, texture also plays a huge role with gloriously glossy finishes as well as beautiful matt surfaces and a range of tile finishes in between. So, let’s jump into the world of coloured bathroom tiles and find out more about how these little gems can transform your space.

Colour and Mood

Bathroom design is all about creating a dream space in which you can relax and soak up the atmosphere. Bathroom design has become more than just about functionality, this is about spaces that reflect your style and one of the simplest ways to achieve this is through the use of colour – and texture.

The right colours will transform your bathroom space from the ordinary into the extraordinary. Throw in a touch of texture and suddenly your dream bathroom is coming to life. Both colour and texture can easily be achieved through the tiles you pick for your bathroom. After all tiles are the canvas for the walls and floors upon which your new dream bathroom will be brought to life and they can be anything from a calming neutral canvas to a backrop that adds bright pops of colour.

We all know that colour can affect mood as well as the overall look and feel of a room. A well-chosen colour palette will transform your space so it’s great that feature tiles can work across the spectrum from neutral colours to pastels, deep tones as well as bright pops of colour. Let’s take a look at each in turn.

Neutrals and soft pastels. If you are looking to create a soothing, nurturing environment then you may prefer your coloured bathroom tiles to be more muted in tone – think light pinks, baby blues or pastel greens. Even taupes and neutral tones can work as coloured bathroom tiles especially for darker bathroom spaces with little natural daylight as they bring a soft, airy feel to spaces and a timeless appeal.

Without any doubt green is a key colour option for bathrooms, partly because it is nature inspired and in addition it is of course so soothing. Whether it is a glossy dark green, a pale pastel green or any other shade, green reminds us of all things natural and is a perfect companion for spaces where we want to relax and unwind.

Similar to greens, blues remind us of nature too with thoughts of the sea and all things water inspired. Lighter, azure blues are reminiscent of the sky – whichever blue you choose this is a calming colour.

Bold colours such as reds, purples, burnt oranges and mustards inject energy into spaces so are perfect if you are looking to add some real personality. Bright pops of colour pair well with everything from concretes and cements to woods and more.

Colour drench or pattern?

For pattern lovers mixing your patterned tiles with a neutral tile can really make them stand out. Whether you choose your patterned tiles for the floor or the wall pairing them with a more subdued concrete effect or cement effect tile can work really well.

For coloured bathroom tiles you may just want a small feature area or instead decide to drench a whole wall in colour for maximum effect.

Or why not mix both? Get creative by picking a complimentary colour and feature tile … you can really create some beautifully interesting spaces!

Tiles and texture

Texture plays a key role in interior design. Any interiors expert will tell you that it is important to combine the rough with the smooth in your room or space and tiles can play a key part in this. Tiles come in a whole array of finishes from matt surfaces that will diffuse light gently to highly glossy surfaces that play with light and reflect beautifully. This isn’t just about colour. The texture or finish of a tile will hugely impact how it looks in your overall space. That same green tile in a polished finish will look very different to the same tile in a more matt texture.

Tile size and grout

Coloured bathroom tiles don’t have to be small either. You can opt for a larger format tile if you prefer. Lots of metallics or coloured tiles come in larger formats so you don’t have to opt for small brick style tiles if you want less grout lines.

Whatever you choose, thinking about grout colour is important too – by choosing a co-ordinating grout you will create more of a seamless feel to a space or if you want to make a feature of your tiles then opt for a contrasting grout.

Fixtures and fittings

Whilst tiles are the canvas for your space, the colour of your chosen fixtures and fittings also plays a key role. Neutral tones marry up well with pretty much most fittings – think chrome for cooler designs with its silver finish or brushed gunmetal for more of an industrial looking design. For warmer toned tiles you may want to opt for antique brass for a deeper aged brass finish or brushed brass for a lighter, warm golden finish. Or opt for black fittings for an ultra modern space with  a check on how easy these are to clean in certain areas with harder water for example.

Order samples

With such key decisions it is always wise to order samples and look at them in different lights in your room. Your early morning light will create a very different effect from early evening light so looking at your chosen tiles at different times of the day is key to getting it right. Artificial light will also impact the overall look and feel of your tiles and therefore your space. Choosing samples can be a great first step to narrowing down your choices and if you are still unsure you can always request a larger sample before making a final decision.
