How to create a stunning tile feature wall

A stunning tile feature wall begins with stunning feature tiles – and we have those in spades! A tile feature wall is a brilliant way to add a dash of personality to spaces. Whether you want to add a bold, bright pop of colour, have a passion for pattern, or want to add a tad of texture to walls we have a gamut of porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles to create an amazing tile feature wall in your home.  Feature tiles come in all shapes and sizes and it isn’t necessarily just small tiles that are perfect for designing that stunning tile feature wall. Larger format porcelain and ceramic tiles can work just as well and with less grout lines can be a perfect way of dressing up the walls in your home. Not sure where to start? Our comprehensive guide to feature tiles will help you find your feet.

Why choose to add a tile feature wall?

Using a feature tile is a great way of adding interest to spaces or creating a focal point. This can be done through colour, texture or pattern. Using a ceramic or porcelain feature tile brings you the best of both worlds – beautiful design and brilliant practicality. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are both super easy to maintain and that makes them ideal for bathrooms and kitchens as well as use across the home.

Where to add a tile feature wall?

You can create a feature wall in any room, then start by choosing a wall that naturally draws the eye and will enhance your room layout – consider the wall opposite a doorway entrance in a bathroom or behind a statement bath or stylish vanity unit. For kitchens you may want to create a wow splashback or pick an area in your kitchen for your feature wall perhaps behind a seating area. For hallways a feature wall is a great way of adding interest to stairways and in the lounge you might want to create a backdrop behind the TV.

With the growth of the indoor outdoor living sector and creation of outside spaces that are extensions of our home, you may want to create a tile feature wall outside too. Porcelain tiles are perfect for this because they are frost and fade resistant.

Types of feature wall

The feature tiles you choose will set the tone for your space so let’s explore some options:

Textured tiles

If you are aiming for a neutral look then a textured tile in muted tones can work brilliantly. Texture is a key element of interior design, combining smoother finishes with rougher, more hewn materials for example. Tiles can really help with this. A textured tile will add depth and even in lighter tones can make a space feel cosier. Click here to view all feature tiles.

Patterned tiles

A patterned tile feature wall can be a fun way to stamp some personality on spaces and create a tile feature wall that really stands out. These tiles add character and colour and can turn any wall into a work of art. Patterned tiles are particularly good for kitchens and bathrooms where you may have a neutral tile across walls and floors and you want to add a little pizzazz in one area of the room.

Colourful tiles

Colour drenching a wall with a feature tile can look simply stunning. Bright, bold feature tiles can really add vibrancy to a room. Opting for a porcelain tile or ceramic tile that includes different shades of the same colour can add even more interest to walls. Add to that feature tiles in glossy finishes with uneven surfacing and these colour feature tiles will play with the light beautifully.

Colour feature tiles don’t have to be bright either. You can create some stunning effects with the more muted tones of whites, sands and taupes aswell as pretty pastel shades like pinks and blues. And these colours pair up brilliantly with patterned tiles too.

And of course these little tiles can also be laid in different ways adding even more interest – think herringbone, vertical, horizontal, basket weave and more. Click here to view all colourful tiles.

Metallic effect tiles

Metallic effect tiles absolutely add the wow factor to any space. They tile pair up brilliantly with all kinds of other tile designs from stones to marbles and woods to concretes and this makes a metal effect tile really versatile. There are some very clever surface finishes to these tiles too so they can really play with the light in spaces and add real interest. Click here to view all metallic tiles.

Porcelain or ceramic tiles?

Feature tiles are available in both porcelain and ceramic materials. Ceramic tiles are usually lighter than porcelain and this makes them easier to cut and to install. They are suitable for internal areas.

Porcelain tiles are very hardwearing and durable and can be used both internally and externally. They are also highly scratch and stain resistant so are a great choice for busy bathrooms and kitchens. Both materials are super easy to clean, warm water and a cloth are all that is usually needed.

To conclude

Feature wall tiles can transform a room or space by adding colour, texture or pattern. With a host of designs and sizes, you can easily create a feature in any room and give that space the wow factor. Check out our beautiful collections of feature wall tiles here.
