And it’s not just walls. Large format tiles are fast becoming the go-to for floors aswell. In fact combining large format tiles for walls and floors can redefine your space

Why choose large wall tiles?

More tile, less grout

One of the key reasons people opt for large wall tiles is because they offer a seamless look and feel. Put simply, these maximum size tiles mean less grout lines and less grout lines makes spaces look less busy. With a smooth, uninterrupted surface, spaces can appear more expansive and stylish.

Enhancing the perception of space

Large wall tiles can actually make a room look bigger and feel more airy. This is particularly good for smaller rooms. We are often asked if you can use large tiles in a small room. In essence using a larger tile in a small room can actually make your room feel bigger purely because you have less grout lines so yes, we definitely think you can use large tiles in a small room.

Contemporary look and feel

Large wall tiles bring an architectural, refined look and feel to spaces. Porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles are designed to mimic other materials and this opens up a whole world of design possibilities and means large wall tiles are available in all kinds of designs that echo marbles, stones, metallics, concretes, woods and more.

If it’s relaxed, modern living you’re seeking then cement and concrete effect large tiles in a simple earthy colour palette can be used to create a serene, calm canvas. Or if it’s a statement wall you are aiming for try stunning metallic effect tiles in rich bronzes or blues adding an industrial vibe. And if you want to create a real feature then statement stones and marbles can be just the ticket. Scroll down to read more about the latest trends in large wall tiles.

Matt finish tiles

Matt finish tiles – sleek, chic and contemporary, matt finish large tiles bring a sophisticated feel to spaces. Where glossy tiles reflect light, matt finishes absorb light and diffuse it softly which in turn makes for a modern, contemporary interior.

Textured tiles

Texture is key to interior design. Any interiors expert will tell you that designing spaces should incorporate both the rough and the smooth so textured tiles are a great way to add depth, warmth and character to spaces.

Wood slat tiles

A wood slat tile will immediately warm up a space. Many wood slat tiles have a slight 3d effect to emulate real wood slats and are a perfect way to give a bathroom that spa like feel. Take our Season and Oakwood large format ceramic tiles for walls. These beautiful 1m x 33cm ceramic tiles are specifically designed with rectified tile edges so grout lines are just a few mm giving the appearance of a seamless wall of wood.

Porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?

Large wall tiles are available in both porcelain and ceramic. Porcelain tiles have the advantage that they are exceptionally durable due to their make-up. A porcelain tile is made from a mixture of clays and minerals and fired at high temperatures making this material scratch, stain and moisture resistant. In fact porcelain is so hardwearing and resistant to frost it can even be used outside. Having said that ceramic tiles are great for bathrooms and their clay make up means they are lighter and easier to cut than porcelain tiles. This can also make them more cost-effective.

Large wall tiles for the floor too

Most porcelain tiles in our collections can be used on the walls and the floors so the idea of running that same large format tile across both horizontal and vertical surfaces is a winner. Using the same size tile across both planes brings cohesion to designs aswell simplicity.

Tips for choosing large wall tiles

Tile Colour – lighter coloured tiles will make a space feel more open and airy whereas darker tones add drama and depth.

Tile Finish – as we have already seen, gloss tiles will reflect more light and enhance the brightness of a room so they are great for spaces with more limited natural light. Matt tiles will diffuse light for a more elegant, subtle feel.

Tile Design – if you are looking for a neutral canvas then concretes and cement effect tiles are your go-to. Or for a real statement wall try metallics, marbles and stones.

Final thoughts

Large wall tiles will not only elevate your space they are highly durable, bring a seamless look and feel to walls and are a must-have for modern interiors. These larger than life tiles do need precise handling and installation for a flawless finish. For walls ensure the substrate you are adhering to has a suitable weight bearing capability and always employ the services of a professional installer.
